Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage

Companies across all industries are becoming increasingly aware of the need to reduce their carbon footprint and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). On January 6, 2021, the IRS finalized and implemented the 45Q tax credit which incentivizes the capture and storage of CO2 that would otherwise be vented or emitted into the atmosphere. Subsurface Geologic CO2 sequestration provides a means to safely store captured CO2 in depleted oil fields or subsurface environments that are identified as suitable storage facilities. Oil and Gas Geologists are well qualified to help companies identify, define and ultimately certify the subsurface structures required for successful Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) projects.

SCA provides Geologists to handle all technical aspects of the CCUS geologic storage project workflow:

  • Subsurface storage site selection – Our consultants identify and high grade potential subsurface storage facilities, considering location, proximity to the CO2 source, accessibility and transportation/pipeline infrastructure.
  • Injectivity – Calculate that adequate pore volume and pressure parameters are met for the optimized injection of liquid CO2.
  • Seal integrity – Ensure that injected CO2 will not escape through existing well leakage or subsurface faulting, that drinking water sources will not be impacted and nearby oil and gas reservoir potential will not be reduced.
  • Capacity – Determine that the storage site selected will meet or exceed the projects’ required storage capacity.
  • Modeling – Build static geologic models to show the subsurface storage structures in detail and develop dynamic models to show the projected behavior of the injected CO2 over time to satisfy regulatory requirements.

SCA can also provide Geoscience consulting expertise to audit and certify ongoing CO2 sequestration projects. Our consultants work with client teams to:

  • Clarify the subsurface technical requirements of the project to satisfy regulatory requirements.
  • Carry out a 3rd party review of the technical work performed by the client’s subsurface teams to assure its accuracy.
  • Complete a detailed QAQC of well log analysis, subsurface mapping techniques and geologic model building workflows.
  • Provide final certification and sign off that the work was sufficient to meet and/or exceed the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification Plan (MRV Plan) regulatory requirements.
